Don & Esther Schon on making a Life & Legacy commitment

Don and Esther Schon

Don and Esther Schon chaired the Federation’s 2015 Annual Campaign. They have made a commitment to leave a legacy gift to the Federation. When asked why they made a Life & Legacy commitment Don said, “It’s the right thing to do. Jewish continuity comes through Jewish community and our culture of tzedakah, or charity.” Esther added, “It’s a legacy for our family.”

Both feel making a Life & Legacy commitment is a good example for their children and is a sound investment, since, as Esther states, “Federation touches more Jewish lives than any other Jewish organization. Because of the infrastructure and foundation, they are always ready to provide help when it’s needed—in our community, in Israel and around the world.”

Don feels that while people can give to programmatic agencies, Federation is best able to evaluate the quality of existing programs and to plan for programs that are needed, but do not yet exist—such as the senior concierge program through JFCS—and prioritize the needs of the community.

For Don and Esther, Federation’s work hits even closer to home.

“It’s an agency that is close to my heart. They helped bring my family here,” said Esther. Her parents were holocaust survivors. Esther was born in a refugee camp, where her family lived for 3.5 years.

Don added, “I wouldn’t have my wife or had my three children if it weren’t for Federation.”

Our sincere thanks to Don & Esther Schon for leading the 2015 Annual Campaign.
