Fran: Helping Our Seniors Maintain Their Independence

Fran
Fran is grateful for the Federation Senior Rides’ friendly, reliable drivers like Julie and for the freedom the program gives her, maintaining her independence and dignity

When Fran could no longer drive, she was concerned. Though her niece helped as much as she could, she works seven days a week and Fran did not want to be a burden. Fran tried several driving services, but found that she would have to wait, sometimes as much as 2.5 hours, after an appointment for a ride home, or that the drivers were not friendly. With a walker, inconvenient routes and wait times, the bus was not an option. Finally, Fran found our senior rides program. She likes that all of the drivers are thoroughly screened, friendly and that they wait with her at appointments so she can get on her way immediately. Fran uses the program to run errands, visit the doctor and to see friends, allowing her to stay active and independent.

I love this program because there isn’t one driver who isn’t nice. This program has given me a new lease on life. I am a bird that can fly now. – Fran Lipman

Federation’s 2014 senior study identified the need for reliable subsidized transportation. In September 2015, as part of its senior services initiative, Federation began funding its senior rides program. Today, the program provides an average of 300 rides each month to our community’s seniors, greatly improving their quality of life by helping them to maintain their independence and dignity and restoring the freedom they lost when they could no longer drive. Seniors use the program to attend religious services and events, to see friends and health care providers, and to go grocery shopping. The need to provide more rides is immense, and we hope to expand the program through the generosity of our donors.
