Marty’s Shabbat Message – August 1, 2019

Shalom Chaverim (Dear Friends),

I am literally writing this message to you as I return from the JFNA National Young Leadership Cabinet Retreat.

Our group of 10 from the Valley was the third largest cohort among 240 participants from 146 Federations in North America.

Our own Rachel Hoffer is co-chair of the cabinet and she was simply outstanding. I, and I’m certain most others in attendance, was deeply moved by her inspirational opening speech. She shared words from her recently deceased father’s ethical will… words burned into her heart, her head and her essence. She and her family are living by those words. They are words we should all live by:

  • Community minded and kind to others
  • Importance of family
  • Live a joyous and fulfilling life
  • The link of generation to generation
Rachel Hoffer

The rise of our young leadership and the important roles our 12 cabinet members are taking at Federation and throughout our community make me very proud.

I am now off to Argentina and Uruguay with Rachel Hoffer and Marc Newman. We are among 117 mission participants from throughout North America. I will write my next Shabbat message about that experience and how our Federation dollars are being put to use by our Jewish brothers and sisters in need there and around the world.

This week’s Torah reading is a double portion, Matot/Masei (Tribes/Journeys) in Numbers. G-d commands Moses to conquer Midian for plotting the moral destruction of the Israelites. Two of the tribes requested the lands east of the Jordan for their cattle, which were awarded to them after they helped the other 10 tribes conquer the lands west of the Jordan as the Promised Land.

Having spent last week with over 240 Young Jewish leaders in Toronto and the coming week with 117 of our best and brightest JFNA volunteer and professional leadership, the journey of our current-day tribe is vibrant, fascinating and full of opportunity and hope.

Shabbat Shalom from Argentina!

Sincerely,

Marty Haberer
President & Chief Executive Officer
