Shalom Chaverim (Dear Friends),
As the calendar turns to August, we can begin to sense the High Holidays just around the corner and another busy and exciting season of “full-on” Jewish offerings in our robust Valley Jewish community.
This week, I’d like to share about the work of Israeli-American Council and their much-anticipated conference. I have been hearing how amazing IAC conferences are for the past several years and am delighted to report that I am signed up to experience my first this November. I hope many of you will join me.
As Barry Shrage, Immediate past president of the Combined Jewish Philanthropies of Boston wrote in a recent article: “Israeli-Americans now present a once-in-a-generation opportunity for our Jewish institutions. By making a nationwide effort to engage this unique and growing community, we strengthen our Jewish life, our relationship to Israel, and our common future.”
I am proud to be a part of this effort through attending the conference.
This week’s Torah portion is Eikev (Because) in the book of Deuteronomy. In it Moses refers to the land the Israelites are about to conquer as “flowing with milk and honey” – the land we have come to know as Israel.
Here in the Valley, we are blessed with the presence of so many Israeli-Americans who are such a vital part of our Jewish continuity. They are our “milk and honey”. We need to reach out to them, partner with them and respect our differences as we build our Valley Jewish community together.
I hope you will join me, Board Co-Chair David Weiner and thousands of Israel lovers at IAC’s national conference in South Florida, Nov. 29-Dec. 2. It will be very interesting and a lot of Israel-style fun. To learn more and to register, please visit israeliamerican.org/conference.
