Shalom Chaverim (Dear Friends),
As you likely have noticed, I try to use this weekly message of mine to share the amazing things going on throughout our Jewish community, resisting focusing too much on our Federation. And I do promise to continue to use this platform with that lens. This past week, however, was simply so off-the-charts awesome for our Federation that I would be remiss if I didn’t shout about it from the rooftops as the saying goes.
First and foremost, we had nearly 600 guests attend MEGA 2018. What a wonderful venue to honor Irwin Kanefsky with our highest award, the Medal of Honor, for his decades-long commitment to Federation and the community. We also presented the inaugural Harold z”l & Jean Grossman Award to Jonathan & Rachel Hoffer for their incredible contributions to Federation and our Jewish community this past year. Yasher Koach (more power to you) to our amazing award recipients and to Jean for all she has done for this community for so very long.
Special thanks as well to Ellie & Michael Ziegler for their new $100,000 gift to support Jews in need in Greater Phoenix, Israel and around the world. Overall, MEGA raised $795,000 this year compared to $591,000 card-for-card value in 2017. This is a 34% increase.
We also premiered a new video that explains what our generous donors make possible through Federation. You should check it out.
This week’s Torah portion is Tetzaveh (And Thou Shall Command). In it, the children of Israel are instructed to provide pure olive oil for the Nair Tamid (eternal flame) and to keep it burning “from evening until morning.” It is the leadership of people like Irwin Kanefsky, Jonathan and Rachel Hoffer, and Jean Grossman, as well as the generosity of donors like the Zieglers, including you, who make the work of our partners possible that keeps this eternal flame burning.
