Marty’s Shabbat Message – July 18, 2019

Shalom Chaverim (Dear Friends),

I am excited for the JFNA Young Leadership conference in Toronto next week. Nine of our 12 cabinet members are attending, not including this ol’ guy. Watching our representation swell from two to seven and now 12 is extremely gratifying. I take great pride in watching our young people take local and national leadership positions. Our own Rachel Hoffer is national co-chair of the entire JFNA Young Leadership Cabinet of 350 members from Federations throughout North America.

Our cabinet representatives are committed to serving our local Jewish community. Rachel Hoffer joins our board in January. Daniel Efune serves as our 2019 major gifts chair and Danielle Gross will serve in that role in 2020, before assuming the helm of the 2021 annual campaign. Adam Finkel chaired our recent men’s mission reunion to San Francisco and he and Josh Kay have been creating some fabulous programs for our local young Jewish couples. We are blessed in so many ways with the gifts of time, talent and treasure of these young leaders.

This week’s Torah Portion is Balak (King of Moab) in Numbers. The prophet Balaam was unable to utter a curse, so he gave a blessing instead, one that I remember staring at over where the Torah was housed as I would pray at my Yeshiva elementary school, Mah Tovu Ohalecha Ya’akov Mishkenotecha Yisroel, How good are your tents, the children of Jacob, the tabernacles of Israel.

Thank you to our Young Leadership Cabinet members for making certain that our Jewish tradition endures for generations to come.

Shabbat Shalom,

Marty Haberer
President & Chief Executive Officer
