Marty’s Shabbat Message – June 20, 2019

Shalom Chaverim (Dear Friends),

While our Ina Levine Jewish Community Campus is always a fun and engaging place to be, the good vibrations go up exponentially during the summer, when hundreds of campers create the friendships and memories of a lifetime. Their smiles and laughter are a gift to those of us who spend so many hours a day here.

The Valley of the Sun JCC’s Shemesh Summer Day Camp provides campers with a new adventure every day. They participate in all kinds of activities from sports, art and archery to cooking, gymnastics, swimming and LEGO engineering. There’s an amazing field trip every week to places like Uptown Jungle, Wonderspaces, Children’s Museum Science Center, Sky Zone and much more. The kids love traveling on the buses, singing camp songs and exploring new places together. In addition, campers grades 2-4 pick their own adventure with CHUGs Choices four times a week and grades 5-8 can choose travel camp. Some recently returned from San Diego where they learned to surf, got a behind the scenes look at SeaWorld and spent the night with the sharks! There’s still an incredible seven weeks left!

Shemesh Camp

Shemesh Summer Day Camp at The J is American Camper Association accredited. See all of their camp options and register at vosjcc.org/shemeshsummer.

This week’s Torah portion is Behaalotecha (Lighting the Lamps) in Numbers. Moses appoints 70 elders to receive his spirit so that they can assist him in the governing of the people.

Like Moses, through Shemesh Summer Day Camp and our other fine Jewish community and sleep away camps, we are “lighting the lights” of the next generation of Jewish leaders. The impact summer camp will have on these campers will be profound, eventually inspiring many of them to work in Jewish communal service and to become leaders in our Jewish community. And, that my friends, is, as the Torah portion also discusses, manna from heaven!

Shabbat Shalom,

Marty Haberer
President & Chief Executive Officer
