Marty’s Shabbat Message – November 29, 2018

Shalom Chaverim (Dear Friends),

I hope you all had a wonderful and meaningful Thanksgiving. It’s amazing for me to realize that Chanukah starts next week!

The festival of lights reminds me of the “lights” we have that shine bright for our community. One that comes to mind is our emerging young leadership. I certainly take comfort in watching the growth of our Phoenix delegation to the JFNA Young Leadership Cabinet and the growth of our NowGen division. It really is exciting.

There is an upcoming Valley Beit Midrash panel discussion featuring some of our community’s bright lights, including our own NowGen co-chair Lily Behboodi. Others include Moishe House’s Jakob Khazanovich (a Federation Board member as well) and Schmooze’s Cory Shapiro. The panel is moderated by Young Adult Leadership Council’s Bryce Schotz (also on the NowGen Giving Circle). My hope is that this will be very well attended by our community’s young adults, those who are single, in particular. Let the young adults in your life know to attend this event on Dec. 12.

This week’s Torah portion is Vayeishev (Dwelt) in Genesis. We are introduced to Joseph, Jacob’s 17-year-old and favorite son. We learn about the technicolor dream coat, the envy of his brothers and his life in Egypt. We know that Joseph ultimately will save his family and the Jewish people from starvation. He was the next generation leader of his time, so it is apropos that this week we are featuring a program focusing on our young people and how incredibly important they are to our Jewish community… today and tomorrow.

Shabbat Shalom,

Marty Haberer
Chief Executive Officer
