Shalom Chaverim (Dear Friends),
I have been writing my Shabbat message every week for almost five years now having never missed a week. With that said, I’m pretty certain that none of those messages have brought me as much joy as the news I am about to share with you now. My wife Lori and I recently learned we will become grandparents for the very first time this April. Our daughter Danielle and son-in-law Colin will be having a baby girl. I can’t even begin to express to you the joy this has brought to all of us. The only friction this may cause in the family is whether our granddaughter will become a St. Louis Cardinals fan, as they reside in St. Louis, or a Red Sox fan like….me. Perhaps suggesting she call me “Big Papi” might tip the scales in my favor. I suspect that the appellation will be rejected outright by the proud parents.
Back to the work of the Federation and our partners. I want to share that I recently became aware of the work of the Phoenix ToolBank and Valley of the Sun United Way. They continue to carry PPE that is still available to nonprofits and schools for free. They currently have: disposable adult masks, cloth adult masks, hand sanitizer (individual and gallon), disinfectant (liquid, hospital-grade cleaner), face shields, and disinfectant wipes available for nonprofits and schools, again, at no cost. For those operating in Maricopa County, orders can be placed from both forms below as there are different items on each (this will help them track for their different donors). For those operating outside of Maricopa County, please use the “Arizona PPE Request” form below. Cloth masks, disinfectant wipes, and disinfectant/cleaner were added later and are not on the forms. These items are available to anyone in the state so please add in the comments section, including quantities, if you would like to request these items. The cloth masks are in packs of five, cases of 500, and the liquid cleaner is in gallon jugs with four gallons per case. And there are 12 containers of disinfectant wipes per case (please order by the case). As a reminder, please use an updated, valid e-mail as that is how they will communicate pick-up information. Thank you,
This week’s Torah portion is Vayeira (Reveals) in the book of Genesis, the first of the five books of Moses. In it, Moses receives the news of the birth of a daughter, Rebecca, to his nephew Bethuel. I can tell you that receiving the news of my own first granddaughter’s arrival is right up there with the best news I have ever received, along with learning that I was going to become a father 28 and 25 years earlier. And I cannot be more grateful. Also in this portion, Lot extends his hospitality to two of three disguised angels. So too, the Phoenix Tool Bank is extending its hospitality throughout our community by providing PPE wherever it is needed. In this way, the Toolbank serves as a modern-day angel in our midst.
