Marty’s Shabbat Message – October 25, 2018

Shalom Chaverim (Dear Friends),

This past week I really sensed that our Jewish communal calendar has shifted into high gear. I attended four events including the Jewish Historical Society dinner, a Smile on Seniors fundraiser, The Shabbos Project’s Great AZ Men’s Event and a Cox interview regarding Federation-sponsored Violins of Hope at the new Congregation Beth Tefillah building. At each event, I was filled with pride in being a member of a special community that has thriving Jewish institutions. I have noticed growing Jewish vibrancy in the short three and a half years that I and my family have lived in the Valley.

We are entering the last 10 weeks of the year, which means only one thing at Federation — it is time to close this year’s annual campaign. Together we can achieve our campaign goal of $3.5 million to meet the growing needs of our community and of Jews in need in Israel and around the world.

One of the fun ways we do this is our Sunday Funday Phone-a-thon coming up on Nov. 4. Come join us! Make some calls, have some fun, win some prizes — all to help the important work that Federation funds. Yes, the games will be on, so you won’t miss a thing. Register to volunteer by Nov. 1 at jewishphoenix.org/patfall2018. If you cannot volunteer, please answer the call and give generously.

This week’s Torah portion is Vayeira (Reveals) in Genesis. If this were a Netflix series, there would be five seasons on this portion alone. Of the many things one could focus on, I choose Lot’s wife looking back as she leaves Sodom. Because she disobeys G-d and looks back, she is turned into a pillar of salt. Jewish tradition teaches us that we should never dwell on the past, but look to what we can do better today. Concerning our Jewish community, while there is much we can learn from our past, it is in our present and future that we need to invest our 3 T’s… Time, Talent and Treasure. Please be a part of the vibrant tapestry that is our community’s present and future by giving to our campaign and by participating in our many wonderful events and programs coming up in the days and weeks ahead.

May we all go from strength to strength.

Shabbat Shalom,

Marty Haberer
Chief Executive Officer
