Marty’s Shabbat Message – September 13, 2018

Shalom Chaverim (Dear Friends),

This past week, I spent a rather extraordinary day and a half with 19 remarkable men who participated in the past two Federation men’s missions to Israel. We came together through the leadership of Steve Hilton, Jay Stein and Jonathan Hoffer for a reunion in Santa Monica. It was an amazing time filled with camaraderie and insights and wonderful to watch these two groups bond into a ‘band of brothers’ with a common desire to celebrate our Jewish heritage, to support Israel and to discover ways to make our Valley the premier place to be Jewish in North America.

Santa Monica Men's Mission

This week’s Torah Portion is Vayelech (And He Went) in Deuteronomy. In it, Moses passes the torch of leading the Jewish people to Joshua. What I witnessed in Santa Monica is the beginning of a vital leadership transfer: passionate, successful, young Jewish men who are accepting the responsibility to create and sustain a vibrant Jewish community for their children, their families and all of us. I could not be more excited, nor prouder, to see what these new beacons of light are going to do.

As you all know, we are now in the Yamim Noraim, the Days of Awe. It is a time for serious introspection, a time to consider our actions over the past year, to repent and to seek forgiveness for any transgressions we’ve committed from both our fellow human beings and from G-d. If, in this past year, I have wronged any of you in any way, I ask that you please forgive me. I will try to do better.

Wishing you all a G’mar Chatima Tova, may you all be inscribed in the book of life in 5779!

Shabbat Shalom,

Marty Haberer
